Recycled Herb Pots PDF Print E-mail

herb potFresh herbs taste so much better than dried ones. Try reusing your aluminum cans to create a mini herb garden. Your children will love decorating their ‘pots’ and learning about taking care of their plants. You will love how great your food tastes!

Save some of your aluminum cans. Try using different sizes. Wash the cans and let them dry. You might want to use some sandpaper to smooth down any rough or sharp edges.

Turn up the can upside down and punch some holes in the bottom of the can to allow for drainage.

Decorate the outside of the can with an acrylic base coat. Get creative and paint designs or use stencils to create a special look. Spray the can with an acrylic sealer so the paint won’t come off.

Place rocks or pebbles in the bottom of the can and then add potting soil until the can is filled two-thirds of the way up the can.

Transplant a potted herb into the can and fill the rest of the can with potting soil. Gently pat the plant into the dirt, but don’t press too firmly. You want the plant to have some room for water to seep through. Place the can on a plate to catch any extra water.

If you’ve opted for seeds, fill the can nearly full with potting soil. Place a couple of seeds in the soil and then cover it with a thin layer of soil. Cover the can with a clear plastic cup to create a green house until the shoots come up. Be sure to keep the soil damp, but not soaked.

Place your plants in a sunny location and watch them grow. Once the weather is warm, they can be moved outside. As your plants grow, transplant them as necessary into larger aluminum cans.

One four-inch potted plant will probably make at least two, if not three, herb pots.
